Cooking with Honey Tips & Honey-Oil Recipes

Cooking with honey is a step towards healthy - and delicious! - eating. The history of honey in cooking goes a long long way. It has been used as an ingredient in various types of cuisines all around the world for many centuries.

The Greeks, for example, have used honey as one of their specialty ingredients in cooking since many many years ago. They normally use it as a glaze for meat, fish and other dishes, as well as in baking cakes and breads.

The ancient Arabs and Persians also used honey in their cuisines. For example, during that time, sweetmeats containing honey were very popular. These sweetmeats were also common in some of the Mediterranean countries.

Mild-flavored types are more commonly used in cooking, but some people want their finished food to have a stronger taste so they tend to choose the darker and stronger-flavored honey. Cooking with honey would also make the texture of your dish firmer and slightly heavier.

There are a few things that you should keep in mind so that your delectable honey recipes will only contain honey that is of good quality.

Honey storage

Proper storage is important to preserve the quality of honey. Things that have to be considered when storing honey are like temperature, moisture content and exposure to sunlight. Get more details about proper honey storage here.

And this leads us to the second point, which is...

Crystallization

Crystallization may happen during storage. Which is okay, because crystallized - or granulated - honey does not mean that the honey is bad and cannot be used. But since honey that is used in cooking is usually in its liquid state, here's how you can liquefy crystallized honey: Put the honey jar in a pan of warm (make sure it's not hot) water, and stir it slowly until it liquefies. I prefer not to use a microwave oven to do this since there is a risk of cracking the jar.

Heating

Another tip when baking or cooking with honey: reduce the temperature, if possible, to avoid the risk of overheating. The great amount of valuable enzymes and nutrients such as minerals and vitamins contained in honey can be lost if honey is overheated.

Preventing honey from sticking

To prevent honey from sticking to your measuring cup and other cooking utensils, spray them with a non-stick spray before using. You can also dip or grease them in oil so that the honey will come off easily.

Substituting sugar

When using honey instead of sugar, it's recommended to use 2/3 or 3/4 cup of honey for every cup of sugar since honey is sweeter than sugar .

Baked Goods

The color of honey will slightly darken the color of the food. When you use honey to replace sugar in baked breads, cakes or cookies, make sure to reduce to oven temperature by 25 degrees F to avoid over-browning.

Many have realized the natural, nutritional benefits of honey and started to include it in their list of ingredients as a substitute for traditional sugar in their recipes.

Although many recipes use sugar as a prime sweetener, it just takes a little getting used to before you realize and enjoy the benefits of cooking with honey as a sugar substitute.
