Many people often dismiss the idea of eating healthy and losing weight by following healthy eating plans or stop doing it when they don’t get the expected results immediately. Some would rather opt for popping diet pills or choose other methods, which unfortunately can be harmful, that (they believe) would give instant results.
Now let’s look at some healthy eating facts and why it’s the best method for weight management.
What is healthy eating?
Healthy eating simply means that you take a balance of different type of foods so that you will get the optimum amount of nutrients that the body needs.
The six types of nutrients that the body needs to take are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, water, vitamins, and minerals. However the amount of each nutrient that your body needs is different, for instance, the body needs fewer amounts of vitamins and minerals as compared to the number of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Each nutrient has its own function in the body.
People try many types of diet to lose weight. What many people don’t understand is that although these diets may work and make you lose weight, these diets provide poor nutrition because the list of food suggested in the diet is limited and therefore does not provide you with the important nutrients needed for a healthy body.
A diet that does not give the body with nutrition cannot be considered as healthy eating. In fact, many also gain back the weight that they lost when starting with the diet.
Facts about eating healthy and losing weight
1) Healthy eating does not mean “banning” foods from your diet. They key is balance and control. For example, healthy eating does not mean you have to completely give up from eating chocolate or candies. But you do have to be careful about the amount that you take.
2) The first step towards healthy eating is to discover your current eating habits. That’s how you will know what you need to change about what and how you eat, knowing what you should consume more and what you should reduce from your daily meal in order to lose weight.
3) Breakfast is an essential part of a healthy diet. Skipping breakfast (or any other meals, for that matter) is not the right and healthy way to lose weight. When you don’t eat breakfast, you would likely consume a very heavy, high-fat lunch or dinner. Have a whole-grain toast with honey spread for a quick, healthy (low-fat) breakfast.
Remember, you don’t need to starve yourself, you just have to make the right dietary choices.
4) The key to eating healthy and losing weight is choosing food that is low in calories. Fruits and vegetables are good choices, containing fiber and water yet low in calories.
Unprocessed fruits and vegetables also contain antioxidants that are essential for our health.
Light-weight food or snack does not necessarily mean they are low in calories. For instance, pop-corn is light in weight but high in calories.
The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, under the US Department of Agriculture, has provided good,easy-to-understand healthy eating guidelines based on the healthy eating pyramid.
