Eating Honey During Pregnancy

Many people are still either confused or skeptical when it comes to eating honey during pregnancy.

For some people, this may be because the relation between pregnancy and honey is rather new to them, while others feel uneasy about it because of what they hear about things such as infant botulism. So here, I will share some important information and explanation about the connection between pregnancy and honey.

Consuming honey is actually safe for pregnant woman, although some doctors would usually recommend pasteurized honey. The reason why some people think honey is not suitable for pregnant moms is related to the fact that honey can contain botulinum spores that can produce toxin in an infant's immature digestive system.

This is why it is safe for pregnant moms to take honey since it would not cause harm to the fetus.

Pregnancy is commonly associated with morning sickness, stuffy nose and heartburns. But pregnant women can now find ways to relieve these discomforts by taking honey during pregnancy.

Morning sickness

Morning sickness is a very common thing that happens to a lot of pregnant women especially in the early stages of pregnancy (except for the lucky few!).

Morning sickness will cause a pregnant mom to experience nausea and vomiting. Drinking lemon juice or lime juice with a teaspoon of honey added to it will help fight the feeling of nauseousness.

Taking honey with apple cider vinegar or ginger tea are also popular hoe remedies for morning sickness.

Stuffy nose

Another reason why pregnancy and honey are commonly associated with each other is because of one of the most inconvenient experiences that many pregnant women go through: stuffy nose. Stuffy nose is caused by the swelling mucus membranes and it can be a real discomfort during pregnancy. But thanks to honey, expecting moms now has a way to get rid of that annoying stuffy nose. To relieve stuffy nose, get a glass of warm water, add one tablespoon of honey and a few drops of lime juice. Stir the solution well and drink.

Heartburn

Taking honey during pregnancy is also effective in relieving heartburn, which is a common discomfort experienced by pregnant moms.

Heartburn is a burning sensation that occurs when the stomach content is pushed back into the esophagus (food channel) which causes an acid reflux that will disturb a soft layer in the esophagus.

Heartburn is usually experienced due to the hormonal changes that take place in the body of a pregnant woman. This will cause discomfort in the upper area of the abdomen, indigestion and sometimes leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

A severe heartburn can result in sleep problems and a decrease in appetite.

Honey is a substance that contains healthy enzymes which facilitates digestion. It also has a powerful healing property that can fight bacteria and heal the tissue on the esophagus, curing acid reflux. Drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon of honey before breakfast can help alleviate the discomfort caused by heartburn.
