How Bees Make Honeycomb

The process of making the honeycomb shows the awesome skills and diligence that the bees have.

Honeycomb is the internal structure and the most important feature inside the beehive – what I call the world’s best factory. It is a combination of chunks of hexagonal cells made of beeswax, a liquid produced by glands on a bee’s abdomen.

Bees have an absolutely amazing way of making the honeycomb.

By this, I mean that they are very organized in their work. They work in groups and each group knows the progress of the other group.

The process of making the honeycomb starts with constructing the hexagonal wax cells. When a group of bees begins constructing the hexagonal cells from one point, another group will join and start the construction from another different point.

Eventually, they will meet at the same point and combine the cells together to make a honeycomb. These hexagonal cells are connected very neatly to each other that it’s quite hard to tell at which exact points they are connected.

I’d say that an extraordinary piece of work!

In addition to that, the honeycomb has to have a particular level of humidity to preserve the honey well. Even a slight difference of humidity than the optimum level can have an effect towards the honey stored inside. There is a special team of bees that are in charge of taking care of the humidity level in the beehive.

The bees work to ensure a perfect air circulation by flapping their wings to fan the honeycomb.

The bees also preserve the quality of honey by protecting the honeycomb from any external elements that may ‘pollute’ it. To do this, another team of bees is assigned at the entrance of the beehive to guard it.

Another defense method used is by covering the hive with a substance called propolis. Propolis acts as an antibiotic element that prevents bacteria from getting inside the honeycomb.
